There are several Connotations given to the words San and Bushmen. Alan Barnard 2007 on p.x of his Anthropology and the Bushmen writes: “The word ‘Bushman’ is certainly not without its problems.

The early humans were under pressure to increase their brain capacity. They did not invent guns and military equipment because that would always mean devolution. So, they made tools to allow them to hunt energy-rich meat products. 

The Bushmen or San was far from being uncivilised. They had a keen sense of perception which includes a sense of smell. They could gather food from nature and had the wisdom to leave a few to grow and feed them on another day.
