6 Kaaps, the Name
© by Peter Snyders As with all new
languages, it is always the youth who take the initiative, such that the
Khoikhoi youth and all later generations of youth transformed the pidgin into a
creole and eventually into the full-grown language of Kaaps as we know it
today. As we study Kaaps from its origin and through the other phases up till
today, we will encounter more differences from that of Afrikaans. Calling Kaaps Kaaps-Afrikaans
is therefore a misnomer and misleading. This is nothing, again, but an attempt
to sneak Afrikaans into its true origin (Kaaps) to extend its predestined
disappearance. It is not possible to make one language out of Kaaps and
Afrikaans because they do not share the same way of life. Afrikaners are mainly
privileged and academic, while Kaapsers are mostly marginalised. There has also
been too much oppression of Kaaps by the Afrikaner elite in the past to make it
possible to discharge all the inappropriate censure towards Kaaps. Kaapsers share the same
history as Afrikaners, but they do so on different sides of the historical
line. Apartheid ensured that the two groups of speakers developed in their own
way, separately. It was and is only to swell the numbers of Afrikaans-speakers by
extending its existence and thrusting Afrikaans onto Black people and Coloureds.
Despite all this disowning of an ethnic group's mother tongue, Kaaps maintained
its uniqueness because it is a spiritual language with no interference by
academics. Other factors are not
conducive to the two languages being able to merge into one language. This is
especially so when the two people have little in common. Kaapsers and
Afrikaners do not share the same intellectual training, once again due to an
oppressive regime. The different speakers do not share the same philosophy,
nature of beauty, art, and taste regarding themselves. The knowledge, belief, and behaviour of Kaapsers are different from that of
Afrikaners strictly because of the separation of races by the utterly deluded
Apartheid mode of rule. Language determines a way of life. It is a means
applied by the group to name their experiences. Once something has been designated,
it goes through the process of determining what should be generally accepted as
customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or
social nature. These characteristic features of the everyday existence or a way
of life of a specific isolated group of people cannot be shared by people in a different
place or by people who do not share similar attitudes, values, goals, and
practices. If such a language
exists, it can only be the ‘classroom Afrikaans.’ For many Kaapsers, this is
the only place where they were (and still are) exposed to the Afrikaans of
Afrikaners. As we shall see, the Kaaps of Coloureds differ substantially from
the Afrikaans of whites. A first-language Kaapser stands little chance of
obtaining good marks unless he or she masters all the avoidance techniques. Some of the Kaaps have
been stolen by Afrikaans. In linguistics, if you use the ideas and writings of
someone without acknowledging your source, it is called plagiarism or stolen
sources. This is because Afrikaners considered their language a pure language
and called Afrikaans, beschaafd (educated, cultivated, refined,
civilised, well-spoken, polished, accomplished, and cultured). Afrikaans is becoming
spiritual. Look at how they freely allow Kaaps in Turkish translations of a
series. Look at how they also use a smaller, more understandable English word,
and how their language now flows. Afrikaaps is another
misleading name for Kaaps, especially if Afri- means Afrikaans.
This term is supposedly nothing more than a slightly different word in
Kaaps-Afrikaans. If Afrikaaps means Afrika (Africa) plus Kaaps, it would make
sense as an African language that originated in Africa or originated at the
Cape of Good Hope. Both particulars are correct concerning Kaaps. The name Kaaps is enough
because it says it all. Since Kaaps – like ALL languages in the world – is rule-governed,
the name Kaaps uses the widely used Kaaps rule of using the shorter word
wherever convenient. Afrikaaps, if you exchange the p with an n,
is Afrikaans. So Afrikaaps is a deceptive name. Steve Biko was right: our
minds are still in the chains of colonialism. That is where true slavery still
makes us powerless. We must remove this restraint from our minds. We must grab
the whip that flouts our understanding and use it to progressively remove the
subtle authority and power
still in control of the minds of most people, irrespective of race or class. We must acknowledge, affirm,
and claim our language for what it truly is: a real language. Kaaps conforms in
all ways to the nature of a language. It is not impure. It is mixed like every other language in the world. It
has more spirit – the vital
principle of a true language – than modern Western languages that are
controlled by human intellectualism. Kaaps was appropriately
named by Adam Small.

this writing on Kaaps, we will look at the ê (alt + 136). The diacritical sign
is [ε] (alt
+ 238). It is written as e in Kora by Menán du Plessis. A diacritical sign is
a sign of a distinctive phoneme of a language. This
diacritical sign [ε] will obviously not work for a written language, so
whenever you see e
in Kora it means [ε], i.e. ê. These
linguistic signs can be very useful. When we consult a dictionary, the
commendable ones will use these signs to indicate how the word is
conventionally (generally) pronounced. The study of any foreign language’s
unfamiliar sounds or pronunciation (typical of Dutch) can be recorded and
remembered by writing the difficult pronunciations in their diacritical [ ]
form. Some linguists use / / in place of the square brackets. We
think that the time is right to prove why it is so difficult (probably
impossible) to just abandon the rules and sounds of one’s own language just to
be civilised in trying one’s best to accommodate the other person’s language.
With our demonstration of (Djan and Djorro) we saw how difficult it is in
the first place for two people with completely different languages to
communicate. It makes the inconvenience for the indigenous person even more
unfavourable. Jan
points at himself and says “Jan”. Jan is a concrete thing, a human being
that Jorro’s senses can see. His sense of understanding tells him that Jan
is the name or label for this fair-skinned man in front of him. Taking this Perception and applying it to himself, he identifies his own name. Please
allow us to add that the scene that we created with Jan and Djorro did not
happen this way. Coree, the Khoikhoi, was kidnapped by the English and taken to
London, where he remained for six months. After he was brought back, he ensured
that the English ships were provided with livestock. When he refused to barter
with the Dutch, they murdered him. The
English then took Autshumao or Autshumao with them on their ship to Bantam. On
the ship he learned to communicate in English with the other seamen. We will
come across him (called Harry or Herrie by the Dutch) after Jan van Riebeeck
came here on 6th April 1652. Autshumao entered the Dutch ship soon
after the Dutch had anchored in the Table Bay. He could speak some English, so
the Dutch could partially understand him. We
are creating a more common way for Europeans meeting the indigenous peoples
for the first time. This is a more universal way of sketching the way a pidgin
language has its foundation. The Djan and Djorro scenario are typical of how
the language began. Returning
to our original train of thought, this is where the second of the six means of
obtaining knowledge comes in. It is called Inference. It means taking one proof and establishing another,
second proof, from it. Those of you who have done mathematics in high school
would be familiar with this systematic way mathematics goes about forever
staying with the facts. Remember,
just as the child’s mind is completely blank at birth regarding any language,
so, too, is the mind of Djorro with regard to the Dutch language. So, we have
again used inference, which is closely associated with our first pramana (tools for obtaining true knowledge),
perception. Similarly, the child,
when it wants to know the name of something, let us say a table or a chair,
points to it. The mother or family member then gives the name. The child now
associates the sensory object (sight) with the sensory sound. This is learning
by perception. Science calls it observation. For
a child to remember something, the mother – and the child – will repeat the new
word on a regular basis. The words ma,
pa, dada, usually get heavy service. As psychology has proved, rote
learning (mechanical, unthinking means of learning) assists the remembrance of
the nouns (material objects). Nothing abstract is suitable at this stage or in
the pidgin phase of language creation. It is the same with the new language,
pidgin, that is germinating. Knowing
words (the lexicon) of a language without knowing how to use them, i.e. the
rules, is quite useless. The child needs to know the rules without even knowing
about rules and language. Even before the rules, the child from birth persistently
hears the sounds of the mother tongue, and because of this continuous exposure
to the sounds of the mother tongue, they are ingrained in the brain of the
child. Again,
Cognitive Science has proved this. Scientists non-invasively put earphones and
electrodes into the child’s cap. While the child was playing, they suddenly
played a sound (phoneme) of the mother tongue. The child’s mind lights up on
the computer screen, showing that it recognised the sound. When
an English-environment child was signalled an uncommon Chinese phoneme, there
was a very tiny reaction in the brain, and it obviously rejected the temporary
and unsaved file. When the situation was reversed, and a Chinese child was
studied using an English foreign sound, the same but opposite happened. This
proves that language sounds – and rules – are internalised, and the more you use
or encounter them, the stronger they attach to the brain and memory.

6.1 Curse

6.1 Khoikhoi
Peter Snyders, in
association with Unison Music and Literary Publications, 17.9.2024. We will, if time
permits, give you many proofs of exactly how civilised the Khoikhoi were. They
not only made music with flutes, but they also made musical instruments in
guitar fashion with bows. When they
retaliated against the Viceroy D’almeida in 1510, eighty Khoikhoi matched the
Portuguese 100 of the best soldiers, who were armed with daggers, lances and swords,
the Khoikhoi made use of their cattle. By whistling to the oxen and with other
signs, the cattle surrounded the soldiers. The Khoikhoi then threw very
accurately fire-hardened assegais as well as stones from slings. More than
eighty soldiers (Castanheda has 65), including twelve Captains, met their end. Instead
of complimenting the Khoikhoi on their Art of War, the writer called the Cape
‘this barbarous place.’Before Van
Riebeeck, R. Raven-Hart p.8 – 9 Sir James
Lancaster, in 1591, traded 24 oxen and as many sheep from people at the Cape, whom
he called ‘certaine blacke salvages, very brutish.’ The writers, Edmund Barker
and Henry May, say, ‘We bought an ox for two knives, a sterke [calf] for a
knife, and a sheep for a knife; and some we bought for lesse value then a
knife.’Before Van
Riebeeck, R. Raven-Hart p.15 Cornelis de
Houtman, from Holland, bought on 9th August 1595 a fine ox for a
poor, short curving sword; one ox for an old cutting
tool that has a thin [adze] arched blade set at right angles to the handle and
is used chiefly for shaping wood. When they wished for two oxen for a new adze,
they gave him a third large ox.Before Van
Riebeeck, R. Raven-Hart p.17 We learnt that
some of the Leendert and Proot’s men who were stranded at the Cape for a year shot and stole the Khoikhoi cattle. The Khoikhoi, who came daily to bring wood
and herbs to the sick Dutchmen, also bartered cattle with them. The gentle
people became furious and killed the raiders. The same thing happened when some
of the crew of Willebrand Geleynscz Jr. in 1648 did the same with 15 or 16 cows
while they were at the Cape for 18 days.Remonstrantie, 1649, Before
Van Riebeeck, R. Raven-Hart p.177 For how long
have the Dutch been doing this? It must have been before 1610 because Nicholas
Downtown a skipper from England says in late July, ‘… Saldinea having beene in
former times comfortable to all of our nation trauiling [travelling] this way,
both outwards and homewards, yeeldeing them aboundance of flesh, as sheepe and
beefes, brought downe for an iron hoope of 14 inches long, and a sheep for a
lesser peece, whereby weake sick men in former Voyages haue beene easilye
recouvered, and made strong. Which now (contraryewise) whither our trade heere were
spoiled by the Dutch men we heare found, who vus [used] to spoile all places
where there come (onlye respecting there owne present occasions) by there [their]
ouermuch libertys.’* [The *libertys is given in the index as ‘that they did so
by stealing the cattle.’]Before Van
Riebeeck, R. Raven-Hart p.47 The text shows how
cheap the cattle were, but the Dutch still stole (raided) the livestock without
paying for them. This was why no bartering was done any longer, and the
Khoikhoi’s homes were moved further inland. We will come
across Aushumao, who will regularly be asking Jan van Riebeeck when the English
will be coming. The second English captain on record is Thomas Best, who on the
29th June 1612 writes: ‘They had thirtie nine Beeves, one hundred
and fifteene sheepe for a little Brasse cut out of two or three old Kettles.
For the sheepe worth one penny, or one penny halfe penny, the [a] piece; the
Beeves twelve pence. The people are loving, afraid at first, by reason of the
unkindnesse of Dutch who came there to make traine Oyle, who killed and stole
their Cattell; and at our returning more kind.’Before Van
Riebeeck, R. Raven-Hart p.59 Here we have
once again the cheapness of the livestock contrasted with the Dutch, who killed
and stole the cattle of the Khoikhoi. I taught myself Arithmetic in 1943 at a
time when the country was under the English. At that time, a quarter-penny was
the smallest value of their money. In 1612, they might have had half a
penny. It was not in shillings or pounds
that the Khoikhoi wanted for their livestock, but in pennies. Pennies were
frequently spoken of as pence, the plural of penny. Walter Peyton on
18 January 1617, says about Coree, the ‘Black gent’ who had been taken to
England for a year that he came only with three sheep, gave one as a gift and
bartered the other two at his rates then ‘hastening awaye with all the speed
hee could, vnto his wyfe & children, whome hee sayd lyued [lived] nowe
farder off then they did before, for more securitie fro strange Shipps coming
thither; I think it is the Hollanders that haue [have] afrighted the people,
from in habiting neare Saldania [Table Bay], by their goeing vp into the
Contrye with one hundred menn at a tyme out of a Fleete of Shipps, by which
meanes they obteyne soe many Cattell as they will haue for nothing …’Before Van
Riebeeck, R. Raven-Hart p.75 Besides showing
how the Dutch came with 100 men at a time from their fleet, raided as many
cattle as they wanted without paying/bartering for them, we have once again an
insight into how English was spoken and written at the time. Coree and
another Khoikhoi were captured by the English in late 1613. Towerson, in the
ship Hector, took Coree to England. Coree’s partner died soon after
while still on the ship. The reason for Coree’s capture was so that he could learn
English and ensure that the English acquired livestock whenever their ship came
into Table Bay (Saldania). He remained in
London for six months in the house of Sir Thomas Smith, the governor of the
East India Company. He learnt a little of European economics and, for instance,
discovered that brass was a cheap commodity. This made them want copper and not
brass. Downtown returned Coree on 15th June 1614. Before this
time, everyone who wanted to barter with the locals had to do so with signs and
sometimes simple one-syllable sounds. We will discuss this in our next, perhaps
the last, post of the Khoikhoi. Because Coree
understood the value of things and learnt in London that his people were
getting scraps for what is rated valuable by the English, he became strict in
bartering, frequently not trading at all. The English regretted housing him in
the capital. So, although we have more information on the raids of the
Hollanders, we would like to say that on page 89, the English also took
Khoikhoi livestock by force: Robert Adams,
1617, 13th July ‘… having dispatched all our business and recovered
our sick men and well refresht all the rest with Beefe and mutton which wee
weare [one word elligible] constrayned to fetch and take pforce [by force] to
the number of 500 hed.’Before Van
Riebeeck, R. Raven-Hart p.89 There are four
more notes on the raiding cattle for nothing, but if you can get hold ofthe book Before
van Riebeeck by R. Raven-Hart and published by C. Struik (Pty) Ltd in 1967,
go to pages 103, 135, 137 and 172 if you are interested. There was more such
treachery by the Dutch, but it is either not recorded or else the unofficial
documents are missing. Coree was
reluctant to barter with the Dutch, always expecting they would disgust him
with their dishonest seizure of the wares. For this, ‘they butchered him.’ (by Thomas
Herbert, 1627 on p.121.) Two years later,
in 1629, John Pynne took Aushumao, (also called Hadah, Harry or by the Dutch,
Herrie) to Bantam. He, too, set up the trading reality at the Cape. He became
later the interpreter of Jan van Riebeeck and often features in the latter’s Journal.
Harry was sometimes invaluable to Van Riebeeck, but they were nevertheless wary
of each other. We will frequently come across Harry, the ‘substitute’ of the Van
Riebeeck halfway station. 16.10.2025. 23.7.2026

6.1 Hacked
By Peter
Snyders I have already told you about Adware. It is
like an advertisement, except it takes control of your computer. After a few
days, you can contact G2A or Bitdefender. The AI will give you two long ways of
how to remove it. None of those ways works. Looking at your problem again, you will
notice that for every one of those entries, it shows its icon in the same place
where the quick access to your icons is in the list at the bottom of
your screen. When you open one of them, you will find that it is hiding in a file
called Personal Vault. Delete it and your worries are over. What did you learn from this? Even the BIG
anti-malware companies expect the malware to be somewhere in your usual files.
Here you would discover that the malware is hiding in your OneDrive account.
Tell the people who tried to help you about their new site; it will help them
and others who approach them with similar problems. Now, you give this OneDrive Cloud an
in-depth look. What does it do? It copies everything you work on and then stores
it. If you use this OneDrive as your backup, then everything is OK. When
malware attacks you again, you know where to first look. But what about your
finances and other money-making talents, like music, for example? I did not find
any music icons. The finances were scattered about. If you find anything the
scammers can steal from you, make your own flash and backup drives. Do the same
with your other talents. But why not delete the OneDrive completely?
If you do this, you will not be able to open files like the Windows Start
button, Settings, Calculator, etc. and you will have other problems which will
show up. Do you remember that sometimes when you
want to delete a file or folder, a message appears that says other files and
folders will also be affected. So, wisely, you do not delete the file, and all
the associated files are left undisturbed. This time, however, you may receive
no such message, and so you delete the whole OneDrive. This time it tells you
that some folders are too big. Another message is that there is not enough
space in your Recycle Bin, so it will have to delete those files. You let it go, and then you discover
something quite disturbing. Many of your Desktop files have been deleted. It
does not delete shortcuts, but where is the original? You realise that all the
files and folders you were working on your Desktop have been deleted. How are you going to get
them back if they are not in your Recycle Bin? This is where you also realise that some
important link in OneDrive has also been lost. You cannot open your Start menu
when you left-click. When you right-click the Start icon, you will see many
options. Now see how many you can open. A big setback is that you cannot use
Search any longer. You also cannot open your calculator or Settings. Your
scanner will also not have that link that makes it work. Look for OneDrive. Open it. You may be
surprised that the Cloud did not eliminate your files but put them somewhere
safe. Your next problem is to get back those files and folders you were working
on your desktop. They just do not seem to go back to where they were. You
will also find that you can only select one file or folder. But after
selecting a file or folder, you may find a download option. So, you can now
transfer your OneDrive files to your Downloads folder. You will also
find that you can select a few folders and download them as extracted folders.
Extract them if you want to use them. Files are usually short, so you can select
several and download them. So, the lesson that we can learn from
OneDrive is not to delete it. The other files and folders that it affects will
put you in an awkward place. See if you can delete a file or folder from
OneDrive. If you can, you can delete all business and financial files or put
them into your flash drive. Next, we will see what happens when you
purchase antivirus software.Stay blessed. Peter
